An Alabama man could face two decades in jail for shooting his son. John Louis Caver has been convicted of first-degree domestic violence by a jury at Dallas County Court, two years after he attacked his son as the family watched an NFL game on TV at their home in Selma.

The father and son were eating chicken and watching the Super Bowl in 2016 .They then began arguing over the chicken, which led to Caver shooting his son. The 77-year-old shot his son, John Caver Jr, in the chest, Caver's then-wife, Eliza, had tried to separate the men when they started arguing over the food.

Caver Jr's sister, Valerie, also tried to get her brother out of their father's home to avoid the violence, but it was too late. They only moved a few feet before the elder Caver fired one round into Caver Jr's chest. Caver Jr was rushed to the hospital, treated for the gunshot wound and survived.
