China has employed tens of thousands of scholars to write an internet version of its national encyclopedia, which will go online next year to compete against Wikipedia.

中国已经雇佣了成千上万名学者撰写国家百科全书的网络版本，这本在线百科全书将于明年上线，成为维基百科的竞争对手。

The third edition of the Chinese Encyclopedia is China's largest publication project, with more than 20,000 authors from universities and research institutes contributing to articles in more than 100 disciplines.

《中国大百科全书》第三版是中国最大的出版项目，共有来自各个大学及研究机构共两万多位作者参与撰写涉及100多个学科的文章。

Designed to be the nation's first digital book of "everything", it will feature more than 300,000 entries, each about 1000 words long, making it twice as large as the Encyclopedia Britannica, and about the same size as the Chinese-language version of Wikipedia.

这本网络百科全书旨在成为中国第一本囊括所有知识的电子书籍，包含30多万个条目，每个条目都大约有1000字的长度，整本书囊括的内容相当于《不列颠百科全书》的两倍，与维基百科中文版本旗鼓相当。

"The Chinese Encyclopedia is not a book, but a Great Wall of culture," Yang Muzhi, the editor-in-chief of the project and the chairman of the Book and Periodicals Distribution Association of China, told at a meeting at the headquarters of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on April 12, according to a report on the academy's website the next day.

根据中国科学院官方网站4月13日的报道，在12日于中国科学院总部召开的会议中，本次项目的执行总主编、中国书刊发行业协会会长杨牧之指出， “《中国大百科全书》并不是一本书，而是一座‘文化万里长城’。”

Yang told the meeting China was under international pressure and felt an urgent need to produce its own encyclopedia to "guide and lead the public and society".
